“As a result of institutional racism, including discriminatory housing and lending policies, many African Americans liv e in segregated areas with high poverty and unemployment and high rates of chronic disease and violence. These segregated communities lack the resources and opportunities required for good health. The geographic concentration of poverty unique to segregated African American residential areas is associated with poor health across a number of health indicators. Reflecting the impact of race and poverty, mortality is 24% higher for African Americans than whites in the US. In Chicago, this inequity is even more extreme. In Chicago, the African American mortality rate is 38% higher than the rate for White Americans."
